Brothers and sisters: I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace;   one Body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Jesus said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west you say immediately that it is going to rain–and so it does; and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say that it is going to be hot–and so it is. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time?“Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison. I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”

Homily

We often think of our lives as a collection of separate days, a series of distinct chapters that we write, edit, and occasionally try to rewrite. We look at the sky, as Jesus suggests in the Gospel, and we notice the weather. We see the clouds gathering in the west and we know the rain is coming; we feel the wind shift from the south and we anticipate the heat. We are very good at reading the surface of things. We are very good at predicting the physical world. But Jesus asks us a question that cuts much deeper than the weather report: 'Why do you not know how to interpret the present time?'

To interpret the present time is not to look at the clouds. It is to look at the light. It is to recognize that our lives are not just a sequence of events, but a continuous, unfolding invitation into the life of God. St. Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians, urges us to live in a manner worthy of the call we have received. He speaks of humility, gentleness, and patience, 'bearing with one another through love.' Think of that phrase: bearing with one another. It suggests a weight, doesn't it? It suggests that the path we walk is not always smooth, and that we are meant to help carry the load for those walking beside us. We are meant to be the ones who steady the hand, who share the burden, who recognize that we are all part of one body, one spirit, one hope.

Benjamin Vo understood this geometry of love. He was a boy who saw the world not as a series of obstacles, but as a vast, interconnected network of possibilities. Think of his passion for aviation. He didn't just look at a Boeing 737 as a machine; he looked at it as a bridge. He looked at it as a way to bring people together, as a way to traverse the vast distances of the earth. He even had a name for his own dream: 'con chim airlines.' There is such a profound, gentle beauty in that. It was a dream of connection. It was a dream of flight. It was a dream that saw beyond the immediate horizon to a place where distance is no obstacle to love.

Alan and Thao, I know that for these four months, the present time has felt like a landscape you are navigating in the dark. You look at the empty space where Benjamin used to be, and you feel the weight of a silence that is deafening. You wonder how to interpret these days. You wonder how to find the path forward when the map seems to have been rewritten. I want you to know that the 'present time' is not just the time of your grief. It is the time of God’s presence. It is the time where the bond of peace that Paul speaks of is being forged in the heat of your longing. You are not walking through this time alone. You are being held in the very same arms that hold Benjamin. The love you have for him is the proof that you are connected to the Eternal. That love is not a memory; it is a living, breathing reality that continues to shape you, to sustain you, and to draw you closer to the heart of the Father.

There is a temptation, when we are trying to interpret our own lives, to look for blame or for hidden meanings in the tragedy. We want to solve the equation. We want to know why the wind blew from the north instead of the south. But Jesus tells us to 'judge for yourselves what is right.' He is inviting us to stop looking for reasons and start looking for the Presence. He is inviting us to realize that the 'last penny' of our sorrow is being paid by him. You do not need to account for the mystery of his life or his departure. You are not the ones who hold the scales of the universe. You are the ones who hold the love. And that love is sufficient. It is more than sufficient.

Ryan, you are a brother who knows that the bond of peace is not a fragile thing. You know the way the house feels, the way the memories are woven into the very fabric of your life together. You are the one who carries the legacy of his curiosity. When you look at the sky, when you think of the planes, when you remember the games you coded together, you are participating in the unity of the spirit that Paul describes. You are a vital part of this family, and your life is a testament to the fact that love is the most durable thing we possess. Keep being the boy who reaches out. Keep being the one who sees the beauty in the small things. You are a witness to the world that love is stronger than any distance, that it is the most beautiful material in the universe.

Think of the image of the 'well' that we carry in our hearts. A well is a place where we go to draw life. It is a place that is deep, quiet, and hidden. The 'Well of Love' that has been dedicated in Ben’s name in Vietnam is a perfect reflection of his soul. It is a source of life for others. It is a place where the thirst of the poor is quenched. It is a sign that the love that was poured into Benjamin is still flowing, still quenching the thirst of the world, still bringing life to the dry places. Every time you are kind, every time you choose to hope, you are adding to that well. You are keeping the water moving. You are ensuring that the legacy of his gentle spirit continues to nourish the earth.

We are living in a time that often feels like a long, cold night. We see the world changing, we feel the ground shifting, and we are tempted to look for security in the things we can control. But Jesus is inviting us to look at the 'present time' through the lens of the Kingdom. He is inviting us to trust that the heat we feel—the heat of our longing, the heat of our tears—is the heat of his presence. He is not distant. He is the one who is walking the road with you. He is the one who is helping you to settle your matters on the way, to find the peace that surpasses all understanding, to release the burdens that were never yours to carry.

So, what do you carry out the door today? It is not a new set of plans. It is a simple, quiet, doable thing: keep your heart open to the movement of the Spirit. When you feel the ache, do not turn away from it. Let it be the place where God meets you. When you see someone who is struggling, when you see someone who is thirsty, when you see someone who is just trying to make it through the day, remember that they, too, bear the image of the Creator. Reach out to them. Give a little of your time, a little of your heart, a little of your kindness. Not because you have to, but because you are overflowing with the love that Benjamin left behind. You are the stewards of his legacy. You are the ones who keep the well flowing.

Do not be afraid of the future. The same God who held Benjamin in his hand as he looked out at the sky is the same God who holds you today as you look out at your own horizon. He is not a stranger. He is your Father. He knows the exact shape of your heart, he knows the depth of your longing, and he knows how much you miss the one you love. And he is promising you that the story is not over. The reunion is certain. Keep your eyes on the sky. Keep your heart in the light. And remember that he is waiting for you, and he is watching over you with that same sweet, gentle smile that you remember so vividly. That smile is a sign. It is a sign that the banquet is coming, and that the One who started this good work in you will surely bring it to completion. You are loved without limit, and you are being held by the same hands that hold him. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
