Rejoice, O young man, while you are young  and let your heart be glad in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart, the vision of your eyes; Yet understand that as regards all this God will bring you to judgment. Ward off grief from your heart and put away trouble from your presence, though the dawn of youth is fleeting.Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come And the years approach of which you will say, I have no pleasure in them; Before the sun is darkened, and the light, and the moon, and the stars, while the clouds return after the rain; When the guardians of the house tremble, and the strong men are bent, And the grinders are idle because they are few, and they who look through the windows grow blind; When the doors to the street are shut, and the sound of the mill is low; When one waits for the chirp of a bird, but all the daughters of song are suppressed; And one fears heights, and perils in the street; When the almond tree blooms, and the locust grows sluggish and the caper berry is without effect, Because man goes to his lasting home, and mourners go about the streets; Before the silver cord is snapped and the golden bowl is broken, And the pitcher is shattered at the spring, and the broken pulley falls into the well, And the dust returns to the earth as it once was, and the life breath returns to God who gave it.Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, all things are vanity!

While they were all amazed at his every deed, Jesus said to his disciples, “Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.”  But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them so that they should not understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Homily

There is a particular kind of silence that settles over a house when the morning light first touches the windows. It is a quiet that is not empty; it is a quiet that is expectant. In the book of Ecclesiastes, we hear that ancient, rhythmic invitation: 'Rejoice, O young man, while you are young, and let your heart be glad in the days of your youth.' It is a beautiful, piercing command. It asks us to look at the dawn, to look at the unfolding of a life, and to see it not as a fleeting thing to be mourned, but as a gift to be celebrated.

I want you to think about the image of the 'silver cord' and the 'golden bowl' that the Scripture mentions today. These are fragile, beautiful things—the vessels that hold the essence of a life. When we think of Benjamin, we do not think of the breaking of the bowl. We think of the light it held. We think of a boy who, at fifteen, had already walked more of the world than most, a boy who stood under the vast sky of Tokyo, or in the quiet, sacred spaces of the Vatican, with a heart that was wide open to the horizon.

Benjamin was a boy who looked at the world and saw potential. He didn't just see a plane; he saw 'con chim airlines.' He didn't just see a screen; he saw a place to build, to code, to create a future. He had that brilliant, analytical mind that could grasp the complexities of the world, but he carried it with the gentleness of a soul that knew the most important things in life are not the things we build, but the love we give. Think of that moment when he offered his entire piggy bank to help his uncle. He didn't break it open. He didn't make a show of it. He simply offered. That is the heart of a saint. That is the heart that belongs to the Kingdom of Heaven.

But today, the Gospel gives us a moment that is, at first, very hard to hear. Jesus says to his disciples, 'Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.' And the Scripture tells us something very human: 'they did not understand this saying; its meaning was hidden from them... and they were afraid to ask him.'

How many of us have stood in that same place? We look at the events of our lives, the moments that change everything, and we are afraid to ask 'Why?' We are afraid because we fear the answer might be silence. We fear that if we ask, we will find that God is far away. But look closely at the disciples. They were afraid to ask, yet they remained with Him. They stayed in His presence. They kept walking the road, even when the path ahead was hidden in shadow.

Alan and Thao, I know the weight of that silence. I know that three months have passed, and yet, in the quiet of the 3:00 a.m. hour, the heart still listens for a voice, still waits for the sound of a footstep in the hall. You have carried your love for Benjamin like a precious, glowing ember. You have kept his spirit alive in the 'Well of Love' in Vietnam, in the kindness you show to others in his name, in the way you honor his memory as a family of four. You are doing exactly what the disciples did: you are staying with the Lord, even when you do not understand the path. You are not walking away. You are holding on. And in that holding on, you are being held.

Ryan, my dear brother, you are the one who knows the laughter best. You know the way Ben would giggle when he talked about his dreams. When you feel the loneliness, remember that you are not just a brother who is left behind. You are a brother who is walking forward with his heart inside your own. You are the one who keeps the dream of 'con chim airlines' alive in your own curiosity, in your own kindness. When you feel the world is quiet, know that you are never walking alone. You are the guardian of his memory, and you are the one who is showing the world what it looks like to love a brother with an eternal love.

There is a temptation to look back at the past and wonder if we missed a sign, or if we could have done more. I want to lift that stone from your hearts today. You were the parents Benjamin needed. You were the family he cherished. You did not miss anything. You are not being accused by God, and you must not accuse yourselves. Let that stone fall. You are free to grieve, you are free to miss him, but you are not required to carry the burden of 'what if.' That is a weight that belongs to the dust, and Christ has already stepped into the future to welcome Benjamin home. You are loved without limit, and you are being held by the same hands that hold him.

In the Psalm today, we pray: 'Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.' This is not a call to count the days we have lost, but to cherish the days we have been given. Benjamin’s life was not a life that was 'cut short' in the eyes of God; it was a life that was completed in the light of His love. He lived with a brilliance that touched everyone he met. He was a boy who looked at the world with wonder, and now, he is looking at the face of the Creator. He is at the Banquet of Heaven, and he is cheering for you. He is watching over you with that same sweet, gentle smile, that same quiet, steady love.

I want you to think of the image of the 'well' again. A well is a place where we go to find what we need to live. The 'Well of Love' in Vietnam is a perfect symbol of Benjamin’s life. It is not a closed system; it is a source of life that keeps giving. His kindness, his empathy—the way he wanted to help his uncle, the way he loved his family—that love is still flowing. It is still quenching the thirst of the poor. It is still bringing hope to the weary. His life was a gift that continues to unfold. You are the stewards of that gift. Every act of kindness you do, every time you choose to love instead of despair, you are keeping his spirit alive and flowing into the world.

So, what do you carry out the door today? It is a simple thing, but a profound one. When the weight of the silence feels too heavy, when the 'why' feels too big for your heart, do not look for answers in the past. Look for the presence in the 'Who.' When you see a plane in the sky, when you see a bird in flight, when you feel a sudden, warm memory of his smile, whisper his name, and then whisper the name of Jesus. Let those two names be your anchor.

You are a family of four, and you are being led, step by step, through the darkness and into the light. The reunion is certain. And in the meantime, keep walking in the presence of God, in the light of the living. He is there, he is waiting, and he is watching over you with that same sweet, gentle smile. You are not walking alone. You are walking toward the Banquet, where all the laborers are gathered, where all the tears are wiped away, and where the love you shared will bloom forever.

Let us not be afraid to ask, and let us not be afraid to hope. The meaning of the journey is hidden from us for now, but the Destination is clear. It is the heart of the Father. And Benjamin is already there, waiting for you, with his arms open wide. Live for him, yes, but live for the One who gave him to you, and who has now called him home. Keep the 'Well of Love' flowing. Keep the kindness moving. Keep the dream alive. And when the evening comes, and you feel the weight of the day, remember the words of the Psalm: 'Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days.' That joy is waiting for you. It is a promise, sealed in the heart of God, and it will never, ever fade. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
