The Word of God
Reading 1 · 1 Corinthians 8:1b-7, 11-13
Brothers and sisters: Knowledge inflates with pride, but love builds up. If anyone supposes he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if one loves God, one is known by him. So about the eating of meat sacrificed to idols: we know that there is no idol in the world, and that there is no God but one. Indeed, even though there are so-called gods in heaven and on earth (there are, to be sure, many “gods” and many “lords”), yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom all things are and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things are and through whom we exist. But not all have this knowledge. There are some who have been so used to idolatry up until now that, when they eat meat sacrificed to idols, their conscience, which is weak, is defiled. Thus, through your knowledge, the weak person is brought to destruction, the brother for whom Christ died. When you sin in this way against your brothers and wound their consciences, weak as they are, you are sinning against Christ. Therefore, if food causes my brother to sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I may not cause my brother to sin.

Jesus said to his disciples: “To you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic. Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount. But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as also your Father is merciful. Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.”

Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way.
Homily

There is a specific kind of silence that fills a home when a child is no longer there to break it. It is not an empty silence; it is a heavy one. It is a silence that seems to hold its breath, waiting for a door to open, for a giggle to erupt, or for the sound of a voice—perhaps talking about a new project, or a dream for a company called 'con chim airlines', or simply asking a question that only a brilliant, curious mind like Benjamin’s would think to ask. You know this silence. You live in it. And today, the readings invite us to bring that silence into the presence of the One who knows the heart of every person, the one who knit Benjamin together in his mother's womb.

Saint Paul tells us today: 'If one loves God, one is known by him.' Think about that. We spend our lives trying to be known, trying to be understood, trying to make our mark. We want people to see our intelligence, our work, our kindness. But the deepest truth is not how well we know the world, but how deeply we are known by the Creator. Benjamin lived this. He was a boy of extraordinary intellect—he was tackling math far beyond his years and diving into the complexities of cloud infrastructure while still in his youth. Yet, what defined him was not his 'knowledge'—which Paul warns can inflate with pride—but his capacity for love. He was a boy who, when he saw his uncle suffering, didn't calculate the cost or worry about his own security; he simply offered everything he had. That is the heart of someone who is truly known by God.

There is a profound comfort in the Psalm today: 'O LORD, you have probed me and you know me; you know when I sit and when I stand.' God knows the exact shape of your grief. He knows the moments when you are sitting at the table, perhaps looking at the empty chair, and the ache hits you like a physical weight. He knows the moments when you are standing in the middle of a room, wondering how to move forward. He does not just know that you are sad; He knows the specific texture of your love for Ben. He knows the way you, Alan and Thao, poured yourselves into him. He knows the bond between brothers that Ryan carries in his heart. You are not walking through this wilderness alone. You are being held by the One who knit Benjamin together.

In the Gospel, Jesus gives us a command that feels almost impossible: 'Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you.' Why does He ask this? Because He wants us to be 'children of the Most High.' He wants us to participate in a love that is not transactional. Most of the world loves only those who love them back. But God is kind even to the ungrateful and the wicked. He is the Father who gives without measuring. When you look at the life of your son, you see a reflection of that unconditional love. Ben didn't love you because you were perfect; he loved you because you were his. He was a boy who could giggle through the pain of spicy noodles in Bangkok just to share a moment with his family. He was a boy who saw the world as a place to be explored, not a place to be conquered. He gave because he was loved, and he was loved because he was a gift.

I want to speak directly to the parents who are suffering. Sometimes, in the quiet of the night, the mind starts to race. It starts to look for reasons, for 'what-ifs,' for moments where you think you might have missed something. You might wonder if you could have been more watchful, more careful, more present. Please, hear this: you were the perfect family for Benjamin. You were not given a task you failed; you were given a life to cherish, and you cherished him perfectly. Illness and the passing of a life are not a judgment on your care. They are not a sign that you missed a sign. They are part of a mystery that is far beyond our human control. God does not accuse you, and you must not accuse yourselves. You are absolved. You are free to grieve without the crushing burden of misplaced guilt. You loved him, and that love remains the most real thing in your lives.

Ryan, you are the keeper of the stories. You saw the world through the same eyes as your brother. You stood beside him at the museums, you watched the planes with him, you shared the daily rhythm of life. When you feel like the world is too quiet, remember that you are not just remembering a past; you are carrying a light. Live your life with the same curiosity Ben had. Explore the technology, look up at the sky, and know that your brother is cheering you on from a place where there is no more pain, only the brilliant, clear light of the Father’s presence. You are his brother forever.

There is a beautiful image in the Gospel: 'A good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap.' This is how God loves us. It is an overflowing measure. Even when our own cups feel empty, even when we feel like we have given everything we have to give, God is pouring out His grace into our lives. He is the one who provides the strength to wake up in the morning. He is the one who gives you the courage to share a memory of Ben, to say his name, to laugh about the 'con chim airlines' and the silly, wonderful, brilliant boy who brought so much joy into your home.

What can you carry out the door today? Just this: be merciful to your own heart. When the grief comes, do not fight it, but do not let it define you. Let it be a reminder of how much you loved. And in the moments when the world feels heavy, look up. Look at the sky, or a bird, or a plane, and remember that Benjamin is part of the great, eternal, and loving plan of God. He is not lost; he is home. You are a family of four, held together by a love that is stronger than death. And one day, the measure will be full, the silence will be broken by the sound of his laughter, and you will see him again, waiting for you at the door of the Father’s house. Until then, stay close to Jesus. He is the one who knows you, He is the one who loves you, and He is the one who is walking every step of this way with you.
