Reading 1 · Ezekiel 37:1-14
The hand of the LORD came upon me, and led me out in the Spirit of the LORD and set me in the center of the plain, which was now filled with bones. He made me walk among the bones in every direction so that I saw how many they were on the surface of the plain. How dry they were! He asked me: Son of man, can these bones come to life? I answered, “Lord GOD, you alone know that.” Then he said to me: Prophesy over these bones, and say to them: Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: See! I will bring spirit into you, that you may come to life. I will put sinews upon you, make flesh grow over you, cover you with skin, and put spirit in you so that you may come to life and know that I am the LORD. I prophesied as I had been told, and even as I was prophesying I heard a noise; it was a rattling as the bones came together, bone joining bone. I saw the sinews and the flesh come upon them, and the skin cover them, but there was no spirit in them. Then the LORD said to me: Prophesy to the spirit, prophesy, son of man, and say to the spirit:  Thus says the Lord GOD From the four winds come, O spirit, and breathe into these slain that they may come to life. I prophesied as he told me, and the spirit came into them; they came alive and stood upright, a vast army. Then he said to me: Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They have been saying, “Our bones are dried up, our hope is lost, and we are cut off.” Therefore, prophesy and say to them: Thus says the Lord GOD: O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them, and bring you back to the land of Israel. Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and have you rise from them, O my people! I will put my spirit in you that you may live, and I will settle you upon your land; thus you shall know that I am the LORD. I have promised, and I will do it, says the LORD.

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

Homily

“Son of man, can these bones come to life?”

It is the question God asks Ezekiel in the middle of a desolate valley. When all hope seems dry and scattered, the Lord commands the prophet to speak to the wind: “From the four winds come, O spirit, and breathe into these slain that they may come to life.” And God makes an absolute promise to His people: “I will open your graves… I will put my spirit in you that you may live.”

Then, in today’s Gospel, a scholar asks Jesus what matters most in all the law. Jesus sums up the entire mystery of our existence in one word: love. “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. And your neighbor as yourself.”

To love God with our whole mind and soul is to marvel at His creation, to use every gift we are given with wonder and joy…

We saw that brilliant, wholehearted love so clearly in Benjamin.

Ben was blessed with an extraordinary mind and an insatiable curiosity. Even as a young boy, he loved diving into deep logic, solving complex problems, and building things from scratch. Whether he was exploring cutting-edge technology, coding applications, or mastering intricate cloud systems right alongside his dad, Ben approached learning not as a chore, but with pure excitement and wonder. Yet for all his sharp intellect, his mind was always guided by an extraordinarily gentle heart—respectful, humble, and full of sweetness.

It has been nine weeks since Benjamin Vo went home to the Lord. Nine weeks where the ache of his absence is felt with every breath, and the valley of grief can feel dry and overwhelming.

Yet Ezekiel’s vision reminds us today: God’s breath is stronger than death. The Spirit that created Ben’s brilliant mind and beautiful soul has not abandoned him. Benjamin is alive in the fullness of Christ’s resurrection, held safe in the eternal embrace of the God he loved.

To Alan, Thao, and dear Ryan: in the quiet moments when the burden feels too heavy to carry, hear God’s promise to breathe new life and peace into your hearts. Lean on the Lord, hold each other close, and keep moving forward with courage and love for Ryan.

To Ben’s aunts and uncles, everyone joining us across the world, every child who is suffering today, and every family carrying a heavy cross: Our Lady wraps you in her maternal mantle. You are seen, you are cherished, and you are held by God.

Benjamin rests in the everlasting light of Christ… where the Spirit breathes eternal peace.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
