A devotion that follows the Mass — not a substitute for it.
Greeting

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Welcome, brothers and sisters, as we gather on this Feast of the Transfiguration to behold the radiant light of Christ and draw strength from His eternal promise.

Penitential Act

Lord Jesus, you revealed your glory on the holy mountain: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you speak peace to our fearful hearts: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are the light that shines in every darkness: Lord, have mercy.

Reading 1 · Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14
As I watched: Thrones were set up and the Ancient One took his throne. His clothing was bright as snow, and the hair on his head as white as wool; his throne was flames of fire, with wheels of burning fire. A surging stream of fire flowed out from where he sat; Thousands upon thousands were ministering to him, and myriads upon myriads attended him. The court was convened and the books were opened. As the visions during the night continued, I saw: One like a Son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven; When he reached the Ancient One and was presented before him, The one like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship; all peoples, nations, and languages serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away, his kingship shall not be destroyed.

Beloved: We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory, “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain. Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
Gospel · Matthew 17:1-9
Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother, John,  and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them;  his face shone like the sun  and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,  “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here,  one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them,  then from the cloud came a voice that said,  “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” And when the disciples raised their eyes,  they saw no one else but Jesus alone. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone  until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

Homily

On the mountain top today, the glory of God breaks through the clouds.

Jesus’ face shines like the sun, and His clothes become as white as light. St. Peter, writing years later in our Second Reading, remembers that unforgettable moment as “a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns.”

Why did Jesus give Peter, James, and John this breathtaking vision of heaven?

Because He knew dark days were coming. He wanted them to carry a flash of eternal glory in their hearts… to remember that human sorrow does not have the final word. When the disciples fell prostrate in fear, Jesus came and touched them, saying: “Rise, and do not be afraid.”

It has been seven weeks since Benjamin Vo entered eternal life. Seven weeks where the darkness of missing him can feel deep and heavy.

Yet in that quiet ache, the voice from the mountain reaches down to us today: *Rise, and do not be afraid.*

Benjamin was a boy who carried a wondrous light in his own spirit. Think of his brilliant, creative mind—how he loved sitting at his computer, effortlessly coding applications and whole worlds into existence, smiling with pure delight at every new idea. He possessed a gift for seeing structure, beauty, and logic where others saw only complexity.

That bright intellect and that gentle heart were gifts from the Father, who takes immense joy in His children.

Ben is not lost in shadow. He is with the Son of Man of whom Daniel prophesied… standing in the radiant, unclouded light of God’s eternal kingdom.

To Alan, Thao, and dear Ryan: Jesus touches your shoulders today, just as He touched the apostles on the mountain. He whispers His tender comfort: *Do not be afraid.* Keep holding each other tight, keep living with courage and love for Ryan, and let Benjamin’s radiant smile illuminate your path.

To Ben’s aunts and uncles, everyone joining from afar, and every family walking through grief: the morning star rises in our hearts. Benjamin rests safely in the glory of the Transfigured Lord… watching over us, until we meet in heaven’s unending dawn.

The Lord’s Prayer

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
