Reading 1 · Isaiah 38:1-6, 21-22, 7-8
When Hezekiah was mortally ill, the prophet Isaiah, son of Amoz, came and said to him: "Thus says the LORD: Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you shall not recover." Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD: "O LORD, remember how faithfully and wholeheartedly I conducted myself in your presence, doing what was pleasing to you!" And Hezekiah wept bitterly. Then the word of the LORD came to Isaiah: "Go, tell Hezekiah: Thus says the LORD, the God of your father David: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will heal you: in three days you shall go up to the LORD's temple; I will add fifteen years to your life. I will rescue you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; I will be a shield to this city." Isaiah then ordered a poultice of figs to be taken and applied to the boil, that he might recover. Then Hezekiah asked, "What is the sign that I shall go up to the temple of the LORD?" Isaiah answered: "This will be the sign for you from the LORD that he will do what he has promised: See, I will make the shadow cast by the sun on the stairway to the terrace of Ahaz go back the ten steps it has advanced." So the sun came back the ten steps it had advanced.

Gospel · Matthew 12:1-8
Jesus was going through a field of grain on the sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, "See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath." He said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry, how he went into the house of God and ate the bread of offering, which neither he nor his companions but only the priests could lawfully eat? Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the priests serving in the temple violate the sabbath and are innocent? I say to you, something greater than the temple is here. If you knew what this meant, I desire mercy, not sacrifice, you would not have condemned these innocent men. For the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath."

Homily

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today's readings offer us a profound look at God's mercy and His ultimate authority over all of life. In our first reading, we hear the dramatic story of King Hezekiah. He is told by the prophet Isaiah to 'put your house in order, for you are about to die.' What a stark, final message! And yet, Hezekiah turns his face to the wall, and he weeps bitterly, praying to the Lord, recalling how faithfully he conducted himself. And what happens? God hears his prayer, sees his tears, and adds fifteen years to his life. He even gives a miraculous sign, making the shadow on the sundial go back ten steps.

This story reminds us that God is not bound by our expectations or even by what seems inevitable. He is a God who hears, who sees, and who responds with mercy. It reminds us that our lives, and the time we are given, are ultimately in His hands. And it shows us a God who deeply values a sincere heart turned towards Him.

Then, in the Gospel, Jesus challenges the Pharisees, who are so caught up in the letter of the law that they miss its spirit. They condemn his disciples for picking grain on the Sabbath. But Jesus reminds them: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' He is Lord of the Sabbath, and He prioritizes human need and compassion over rigid rules. He is pointing to a higher law, a law of love and mercy that flows from the very heart of God.

Four weeks ago, our beloved Benjamin Vo entered into eternal life. We remember Ben today, a young man whose spirit was marked by a gentle kindness and an effortless happiness. He had a radiant smile that lit up every room he entered, and a deep respect for his parents that was truly beautiful to witness. That gentle spirit, that capacity for pure joy, truly reflected the mercy and love that Jesus speaks of in the Gospel. Benjamin, in his own way, lived out the truth that God desires mercy, that God desires a loving heart.

His life, though not as long as Hezekiah’s extended years, was full. It was a life lived with a gentle heart, a life that brought joy to so many. And just as God heard Hezekiah’s prayer, we trust that God heard every prayer offered for Ben, and that He continues to hear our prayers for peace and comfort.

To Alan and Thao, to Ryan, and to all of Ben’s family and friends: the grief you carry is immense. It is natural to weep bitterly, just as Hezekiah did. But remember the Psalmist's refrain: 'You saved my life, O Lord; I shall not die.' This is our hope in Christ: that death is not the end, that Benjamin lives in the Lord’s presence. And to every family carrying a heavy cross, to every child who is suffering, whether you are here with us or tuning in from afar, please know that you are seen, you are held, and you are loved by a God who desires mercy, not sacrifice. He is a God who hears your prayers, sees your tears, and offers you His unwavering love. May that love, and the gentle spirit of Benjamin, strengthen and console you always. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
