Liturgy of the Word
Reading 1 · Ezekiel 24:15-23
The word of the LORD came to me:  Son of man, by a sudden blow I am taking away from you the delight of your eyes, but do not mourn or weep or shed any tears. Groan in silence, make no lament for the dead, bind on your turban, put your sandals on your feet, do not cover your beard, and do not eat the customary bread. That evening my wife died, and the next morning I did as I had been commanded. Then the people asked me, “Will you not tell us what all these things that you are doing mean for us?” I therefore spoke to the people that morning, saying to them: Thus the word of the LORD came to me: Say to the house of Israel:   Thus says the Lord GOD: I will now desecrate my sanctuary, the stronghold of your pride, the delight of your eyes, the desire of your soul. The sons and daughters you left behind shall fall by the sword. Ezekiel shall be a sign for you: all that he did you shall do when it happens. Thus you shall know that I am the LORD. You shall do as I have done, not covering your beards nor eating the customary bread. Your turbans shall remain on your heads, your sandals on your feet. You shall not mourn or weep, but you shall rot away because of your sins and groan one to another.

Gospel · Matthew 19:16-22
A young man approached Jesus and said, “Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?” He answered him, “Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He asked him, “Which ones?” And Jesus replied, “You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother; and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Homily

In today’s Gospel, a young man comes running to Jesus with the deepest question of the human soul: “Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?”

Jesus points him first to love and reverence—to keep the commandments, to honor father and mother, and to love one’s neighbor. And then Jesus invites him higher still: to place his whole heart, his true treasure, into the hands of God.

In our first reading, the prophet Ezekiel speaks tenderly of “the delight of your eyes, the desire of your soul.” God knows what is precious to us. He knows the love that binds families together, and He calls us to remain rooted in Him, our loving Creator, who never forgets His children.

What does it look like to pursue what is good with a pure and undivided heart?

We saw that beautiful pursuit in Benjamin Vo.

Benjamin was a boy who gave his whole heart to whatever he set out to do. He lived with a quiet, determined conviction that “trying is all that matters.” Whether he was working hard on the badminton court, diving with his brilliant mind into solving complex problems, or listening with pure joy to his dad’s stories, Ben never held back his effort or his kindness. He honored his parents with natural respect, gentle humility, and a radiant smile that lifted everyone around him.

It has been nine weeks since Benjamin went home to the Lord. Nine weeks where the silence can feel heavy, and the ache of missing him is woven into every day.

Yet the Gospel reminds us today that treasure stored in heaven is never lost… it is kept safe forever in the Father’s embrace. Ben’s gentle goodness, his striving, and his deep love are safely gathered into Christ’s eternal life.

To Alan, Thao, and dear Ryan: the Lord sees your profound love and devotion. Lean into His gentle strength today. Hold close to one another, and keep moving forward with courage and hope for Ryan.

To Ben’s aunts, uncles, everyone praying with us from near and far, children who carry heavy burdens, and all who grieve: Our Lady wraps her mantle of peace around you. You are held tenderly by God.

Benjamin rests in the everlasting light of Christ… where every good and faithful effort is crowned with peace.

The Lord’s Prayer

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
