Penitential Act

Lord Jesus, you are our stronghold in times of distress: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you invite us to trust you with faith like a mustard seed: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you never forsake those who seek your face: Lord, have mercy.

Reading 1 · Habakkuk 1:12—2:4
Are you not from eternity, O LORD, my holy God, immortal? O LORD, you have marked him for judgment, O Rock, you have readied him punishment! Too pure are your eyes to look upon evil, and the sight of misery you cannot endure. Why, then, do you gaze on the faithless in silence while the wicked man devours one more just than himself? You have made man like the fish of the sea, like creeping things without a ruler. He brings them all up with his hook, he hauls them away with his net, He gathers them in his seine; and so he rejoices and exults. Therefore he sacrifices to his net, and burns incense to his seine; for thanks to them his portion is generous, and his repast sumptuous. Shall he, then, keep on brandishing his sword to slay peoples without mercy?I will stand at my guard post, and station myself upon the rampart, And keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what answer he will give to my complaint. Then the LORD answered me and said: Write down the vision Clearly upon the tablets, so that one can read it readily. For the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint; If it delays, wait for it, it will surely come, it will not be late. The rash man has no integrity; but the just man, because of his faith, shall live.

A man came up to Jesus, knelt down before him, and said, “Lord, have pity on my son, who is a lunatic and suffers severely; often he falls into fire, and often into water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him.” Jesus said in reply, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you?   Bring the boy here to me.” Jesus rebuked him and the demon came out of him, and from that hour the boy was cured. Then the disciples approached Jesus in private and said, “Why could we not drive it out?” He said to them, “Because of your little faith. Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Homily

“I will stand at my guard post, and station myself upon the rampart…”

That is how the prophet Habakkuk begins today’s First Reading. He looks up at the sky and speaks with total honesty to God. He sees the heavy burdens of the world and asks the question so many hearts whisper in silence: *Where are you, Lord?*

And God gives him a wonderful, quiet answer:

“Write down the vision… if it delays, wait for it, it will surely come… the just man, because of his faith, shall live.”

Then in the Gospel, Jesus takes that promise even deeper. When His disciples ask why they could not move a difficulty out of their way, Jesus tells them that faith does not need to be massive or loud to be powerful. It only needs to be as small as a mustard seed. Small faith… quiet faith… patient faith can move mountains.

We saw that gentle, faithful spirit so beautifully in Benjamin Vo.

Benjamin was a boy who knew the beauty of simple, quiet moments. Think of how much he loved sitting close to his father, listening with pure delight as his dad told him stories. Ben didn’t need grand spectacles to be happy; he loved listening, absorbing every word with that sweet, attentive smile. And whenever he set his mind to a task, whether learning something complex or stepping onto the badminton court, he held a simple truth in his heart: *trying is all that matters.*

That is mustard-seed faith. Not demanding, but trying with all your heart and trusting God with the rest.

It has been eight weeks since Benjamin entered eternal life. Eight weeks of standing on the rampart, missing his gentle voice and his warm presence in the home.

Yet the Lord reminds us today that no moment of love is ever lost. The God who held Benjamin in life holds him safely now in His eternal Kingdom.

To Alan, Thao, and dear Ryan: Jesus sees every quiet tear and stands right beside you. Keep holding each other tight, taking each day one step at a time, and surrounding Ryan with your love.

To Ben’s aunts and uncles, everyone joining us from afar, and every family carrying a heavy cross: God hears your prayers.

Benjamin Vo rests now in the Savior’s loving arms… watching over us with his gentle smile, where peace lives forever.

The Lord’s Prayer

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
