Saint Landericus, known in French as Saint Landry, was Bishop of Paris in the mid-seventh century, serving from about 650 until his death around 661. During a severe famine he sold the church's sacred vessels and furnishings to feed the starving, and he founded a hospital for the poor and sick near the cathedral, which grew into the Hôtel-Dieu, the oldest hospital in Paris.
Landericus shows that the Church's treasures exist for people, not the other way around — when his flock was hungry, he emptied the sanctuary to fill their hands. His care for the sick and the poor reminds us that tender, practical mercy toward those who suffer is one of the surest ways to love God.
