Saint Ephrem (c. 306–373) was a deacon in Nisibis and later Edessa in Syria, renowned for his hymns and biblical commentaries written in Syriac. He used poetry and song to teach the faith and defend it against heresy, earning him the title 'Harp of the Holy Spirit.' He was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XV in 1920.
