Saint Ludger was born in Frisia around 742 and studied under Alcuin of York before returning home as a missionary to the Frisian and Saxon peoples. He founded the abbey of Werden and became the first bishop of Münster, where he served gently until his death on March 26, 809.
Ludger was known for patience over force: where others tried to compel faith, he won hearts by teaching, kindness, and steady prayer. Even on the last day of his life, though ill, he did not set aside his duties, showing a quiet faithfulness that finished the work love had begun.
Lord, as Saint Ludger carried Your light with gentleness and never wearied in loving service, help us to be faithful in the small daily acts of love You ask of us. Amen.Enter today’s Mass → All saints →
