Saint John Joseph of the Cross was born on the island of Ischia, Italy, in 1654 and entered the Franciscans of the Alcantarine reform as a young man. Known for his deep humility, austere penance, and gift of spiritual counsel, he served as a superior and spiritual director in Naples. He died on March 5, 1734, and was canonized by Pope Gregory XVI in 1839.

He shows that holiness grows through humility and self-denial embraced out of love, not for their own sake. Though entrusted with leadership, he preferred the lowest tasks and served his brothers with gentleness, reminding us that true greatness lies in quiet, faithful service.

Lord Jesus, who taught Saint John Joseph of the Cross the way of humility and penance, grant us the grace to serve others quietly and to seek you above all things. Amen.
