On May 31 the Church celebrates the Feast of the Visitation, when the Blessed Virgin Mary, carrying Jesus in her womb, traveled to the hill country of Judea to help her elderly cousin Elizabeth, who was expecting John the Baptist. At Mary's greeting, the infant John leaped in Elizabeth's womb, and Mary responded with her great song of praise, the Magnificat: 'My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.'
Mary teaches us that real love moves — she did not wait to be asked, but went in haste to serve someone who needed her. Even while carrying her own great joy and uncertainty, she brought Christ to another home, and her presence brought blessing and gladness. We imitate her whenever we set aside our own concerns to show up for family and friends, especially in times of waiting, worry, or grief.
Blessed Mother, who carried Jesus in haste to those you loved, visit our home and our hearts today, and teach us to bring your Son's peace to everyone we meet. Amen.
