The Seven Holy Brothers

The Seven Holy Brothers — Januarius, Felix, Philip, Silvanus, Alexander, Vitalis, and Martial — were martyred in Rome in the second century during the persecution under Marcus Aurelius. According to ancient tradition they were the sons of Saint Felicity, who encouraged each of them to remain faithful to Christ and was herself martyred after them. They have been honored together on July 10 since the earliest centuries of the Roman Church.

Facing death one after another, the brothers chose faithfulness to Christ over their own lives, strengthened by a mother who loved heaven for her children more than earthly safety. Their witness reminds us that faith is handed on in families, and that love within a family can be strong enough to carry each member all the way home to God.

Lord, who gave the Seven Holy Brothers courage to remain faithful together, bind our families close to You and to one another, until we are all reunited in Your presence. Amen.
