On this day, eight days after the Assumption, the Church honors Mary, the mother of Jesus, as Queen of Heaven and Earth. Pope Pius XII established this memorial in 1954, and it was later placed on August 22 to link Mary's crowning in heaven with her Assumption. As the humble young woman of Nazareth who said yes to God, she now reigns beside her Son.
Mary's queenship is not one of power or distance, but of a mother's tender care — she reigns by loving, interceding, and drawing her children close to Jesus. Her whole life shows that greatness in God's eyes comes through trust, humility, and a heart open to His will, even through sorrow. She reminds us that those we love who have gone before us are not far away, but held close in the court of a gentle Queen.
