On September 8 the Church celebrates the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, nine months after the feast of her Immaculate Conception. This feast has been kept since at least the sixth century, beginning in Jerusalem, and tradition names her parents as Saints Joachim and Anne. Her birth marked the dawn of salvation, for from her would be born Jesus, the Savior of the world.
Mary's whole life was a quiet, complete yes to God, from her hidden birth to her place beneath the Cross. She shows us that God prepares great things through small, humble beginnings, and that a heart open to Him can carry hope into the world. As a mother, she understands both deep joy and deep sorrow, and she stays close to all who grieve.
Blessed Mother, on the feast of your birth, hold all our children close to your Son, and keep Ben in your tender care until we are together again. Amen.
