These were the Christians of Rome put to death under the emperor Nero after the great fire of 64 AD, which Nero blamed on them. The Roman historian Tacitus records that they were tortured and killed in Nero's gardens and the circus, some thrown to wild beasts and others burned. They are honored as the first companions of Saints Peter and Paul in the Roman Church's witness of blood.
Most of their names are unknown to us, yet their faithfulness helped the Church in Rome take root and endure. They remind us that quiet, hidden fidelity matters to God even when no one records it. Their courage in suffering shows that love for Christ can be stronger than fear, even of death.
Lord, as You gave the first martyrs of Rome courage to remain faithful in suffering, strengthen us in our own trials, and gather us with all Your saints into Your peace. Amen.
