Protus and Hyacinth were early Christian martyrs of Rome, remembered together since at least the fourth century, when their names appear in the Church's oldest calendars. Tradition holds they were brothers who died for the faith during the Roman persecutions and were buried in the catacombs. In 1845 the tomb of Hyacinth was discovered still sealed in the catacomb of Saint Hermes, a rare and moving confirmation of the ancient devotion to these saints.
Their names have been spoken together in prayer for over sixteen centuries, though almost nothing else about their lives survives. They remind us that God keeps every faithful soul in His memory, even when the world forgets the details. Love and fidelity, not fame, are what endure.
Lord, through the intercession of Saints Protus and Hyacinth, who gave their lives rather than let go of You, keep us and those we love held fast in Your unfailing memory. Amen.
