Processus and Martinian were early Christian martyrs of Rome, venerated since ancient times. According to tradition they were the jailers of Saints Peter and Paul in the Mamertine Prison, converted by the apostles' witness, and gave their lives for the faith. They were buried on the Via Aurelia, and their relics now rest beneath an altar in Saint Peter's Basilica.
They remind us that grace can reach anyone, anywhere — even a prison guard standing watch over the condemned. Having glimpsed the love of Christ in his suffering apostles, they chose faith over safety and held it to the end. Their quiet courage teaches us that it is never too late, and no place too dark, to say yes to God.
Saints Processus and Martinian, who found Christ in a dark prison and followed him into light, pray for us and for all we love, that our hearts may stay faithful in every trial. Amen.
