Philip, from Bethsaida in Galilee, was among the first apostles Jesus called, and at the Last Supper he asked, 'Lord, show us the Father.' James, the son of Alphaeus and often called James the Less, is honored as an early leader of the Church in Jerusalem. Their feast is kept together on May 3 because their relics were placed together in the Basilica of the Twelve Apostles in Rome.
Philip and James remind us that faith often begins with a simple question or a quiet, steady fidelity rather than dramatic gestures. Philip's honest longing to see the Father, and James's patient service to the young Church, show that Jesus answers those who seek Him: 'Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.' Their friendship with Christ, carried all the way to martyrdom, encourages us to keep following even when we do not yet see everything clearly.
Lord Jesus, who showed Philip the face of the Father and made James a pillar of Your Church, help us to seek You with honest hearts and serve You faithfully; through the prayers of Your apostles, comfort all who grieve and lead us to see You one day face to face. Amen.
