Saint Peter, a fisherman from Galilee, was called by Jesus to be the leader of the apostles and, according to ancient tradition, was martyred by crucifixion in Rome under Nero around 64-67 AD. Saint Paul, once a persecutor of Christians, became the great Apostle to the Gentiles after his conversion on the road to Damascus, authoring many New Testament letters before being beheaded in Rome. The Church has celebrated their joint solemnity on June 29 since antiquity.
Peter and Paul show that God builds his Church on transformed weakness: one denied Christ three times, the other persecuted his followers, yet both became pillars of the faith through repentance and grace. Their witness unto death teaches us courage in confessing Christ and zeal in sharing the Gospel.
Lord God, through the intercession of the apostles Peter and Paul, strengthen our faith and make us bold witnesses of your Gospel, that we may remain firm on the rock of your Church. Amen.
