September 29 is the feast of the three Archangels named in Scripture, kept since ancient times as Michaelmas. Michael, whose name means 'Who is like God?', appears in Daniel and Revelation as the defender of God's people against evil; Gabriel announced the births of John the Baptist and of Jesus to Zechariah and to Mary; Raphael, in the Book of Tobit, accompanied young Tobias on his journey and brought healing to his family.
The Archangels remind us that heaven is not far away — God sends His messengers to guard, to announce good news, and to heal. Michael teaches us courage in the face of darkness, Gabriel teaches us to listen for God's word, and Raphael shows that God walks beside us on every journey, especially through grief. They are a comfort to all who trust that our loved ones are held in the company of angels.
Holy Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, defend us, bring us God's good news, and heal our hearts; watch over those we love who have gone before us, and lead us all safely home to God. Amen.
