Mark and Marcellian were twin brothers from a noble Roman family, martyred around the year 286 during the persecution of Diocletian. According to early tradition, when their family begged them to renounce Christ and save their lives, Saint Sebastian encouraged them to stand firm in the faith. They were bound, pierced with lances, and buried in the catacombs on the Via Ardeatina, where their tomb was venerated from ancient times.
Facing every pressure a heart can feel — the tears of parents, a wife, and children pleading with them to live — they held fast to Christ, trusting that love does not end at death. Their brotherhood reminds us that faith is easier to keep when we keep it together, strengthening one another as Sebastian strengthened them.
Saints Mark and Marcellian, who chose Christ over every earthly comfort, pray for us, that we may hold fast to hope in sorrow and trust that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Amen.
