Saint Cornelius was Bishop of Rome from 251 to 253, defending mercy for Christians who had lapsed under persecution and dying in exile at Civitavecchia. Saint Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage and a gifted writer, supported Cornelius in that struggle and was beheaded for the faith in 258. The Church honors these two friends together as martyrs of the third-century persecutions.
They chose compassion over harshness, welcoming back the fallen with patience rather than condemnation, and stood firm in unity even when it cost them everything. Their friendship across the sea — pope and bishop encouraging each other by letter — shows how faith is sustained by love that keeps reaching out.
Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, faithful shepherds and martyrs, help us to hold fast to Christ with courage and to treat every wounded soul with mercy. Amen.
