Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus were fourth-century bishops in Cappadocia, close friends from their student days in Athens, and Doctors of the Church. Basil organized care for the poor and sick and shaped monastic life in the East, while Gregory's preaching on the Trinity earned him the title 'the Theologian.' Both defended the divinity of Christ against Arianism and helped the Church hold fast to the faith of Nicaea.
Their friendship shows that faith deepens when it is shared — they sought God together, encouraged each other, and spurred one another on to holiness. They remind us that great love of God overflows into love of neighbor, in Basil's care for the suffering and Gregory's patient teaching.
Lord, who gave Your Church the wisdom and friendship of Saints Basil and Gregory, help us to seek You together with those we love, and to speak Your truth with gentle hearts. Amen.
