Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo (1538–1606) was a Spanish layman and law professor who was appointed Archbishop of Lima, Peru, and ordained for that mission. He tirelessly traversed his vast diocese on foot, learned indigenous languages, defended the native peoples against abuses, and convened councils that reformed the Church in the New World. He confirmed Saint Rose of Lima and is believed to have confirmed Saint Martin de Porres, and was canonized in 1726.
Turibius shows that true leadership means going out to the people, sharing their hardships, and defending the vulnerable against injustice. His willingness to learn the languages of his flock reminds us to meet others where they are with humility and love.
Lord, who gave your Church the zealous shepherd Saint Turibius, grant that we may serve the poor and defend the dignity of every person; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
