Saint Thomas of Villanova was born in Fuenllana, Spain, in 1488. He became an Augustinian friar and was known for his profound learning and his deep commitment to the poor. He served as a professor of theology and prior in several monasteries before being appointed Archbishop of Valencia, a position he initially refused but ultimately accepted out of obedience.
As Archbishop, Saint Thomas was a tireless pastor who reformed his diocese, established seminaries, and dedicated himself to charitable works. He famously sold his own possessions, including his pallium, to provide for the needy. His example teaches us the importance of humility, selfless service, and radical generosity towards the poor.
O God, who adorned Saint Thomas of Villanova with a spirit of poverty and love for the poor, grant that through his intercession, we may imitate his charity and serve Christ in our brothers and sisters. Amen.
