Saint Theodosius (c. 423–529) was born in Cappadocia and became a monk in the Holy Land, founding a great monastery near Bethlehem that welcomed monks of many languages and cared for the sick, the elderly, and the poor. Appointed head of all the communal monasteries of Palestine, he defended the true faith against error and lived to about 105 years of age.
Theodosius shows that a life given to prayer can also be a life of tender, practical care — his monastery was as much a hospital and refuge as a house of worship. He reminds us that faithfulness over a long lifetime, in quiet service to the weak and the grieving, is itself a form of greatness.
Lord, through the prayers of Saint Theodosius, teach us to make our homes places of welcome and mercy, and keep us faithful to You all the days of our lives. Amen.
