Saint Sylvester I served as Bishop of Rome from 314 to 335, during the reign of the emperor Constantine, when the Church first emerged from persecution into peace. In his years as pope the great Council of Nicaea was held in 325, to which he sent his legates, and the first great Roman basilicas, including Saint John Lateran, were built. He died on December 31, 335, and was buried on the Salarian Way.
Sylvester led the Church through a time of enormous change, quietly and faithfully, without seeking the spotlight for himself. As the year closes on his feast, he reminds us that God works steadily through seasons of both hardship and peace, and that a faithful life is measured not in drama but in perseverance to the end.
Lord, as this year ends, we thank You for every grace it held; through the prayers of Saint Sylvester, keep us faithful through every season, and bring us and those we love safely home to You. Amen.
