Saint Stephen (c. 975–1038) was the first King of Hungary, crowned around the year 1000 with a crown sent by Pope Sylvester II. He united the Magyar tribes, established dioceses and monasteries throughout his kingdom, and worked to root the Christian faith in Hungarian life. He endured the sorrow of losing his beloved son, Saint Emeric, and died on the feast of the Assumption, having entrusted his kingdom to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Stephen shows us how to build something lasting on a foundation of faith — leading not for his own glory but to bring his people closer to God. He also knew the deepest grief a parent can know, the loss of a child, and still placed everything he loved into Mary's hands with trust.
