Saint Simeon was a kinsman of Jesus, traditionally identified as the son of Clopas, and succeeded Saint James as the second bishop of Jerusalem. He led the Christian community there for many years, guiding it through persecution and the destruction of the city. According to early Church historians he was martyred by crucifixion around the year 107, at a very old age, during the reign of the emperor Trajan.
Simeon shows us a faithfulness that lasts a whole lifetime — he served quietly for decades and remained true to Christ even in old age, when suffering came. His steadiness reminds us that love for God is proven not in one great moment but in staying close to Him through every season, in sorrow as well as joy.
Saint Simeon, faithful shepherd and kinsman of the Lord, pray that we may remain steadfast in faith through every trial, and watch over those we love until we are all gathered home. Amen.
