Saint Severinus was a fifth-century monk and missionary who came to Noricum, along the Danube in present-day Austria, as Roman rule was collapsing. He founded monasteries, ransomed captives, organized food for the starving, and became a father to a frightened people, dying on January 8, 482. His life was recorded by his disciple Eugippius, who knew him personally.
Severinus stepped into a world falling apart and answered fear with steady, practical love — feeding the hungry, comforting refugees, and praying without ceasing. He shows that holiness often looks like simply staying present with the suffering, bringing peace where everything feels uncertain.
Saint Severinus, who brought hope to a people in dark and uncertain days, pray for us and for all we love, that we may trust God's care and be bearers of His peace. Amen.
