Saint Sabas (439–532) was born in Cappadocia and became a monk while still young, eventually settling in the Judean desert near Jerusalem. There he founded the Great Lavra, later known as Mar Saba, one of the oldest continuously inhabited monasteries in the world, and guided many monks as their abbot. He defended the Church's teaching on Christ and was trusted by patriarchs and emperors alike as a voice of peace and orthodox faith.
Sabas shows that a life given quietly to prayer can shape the whole Church, far beyond the desert where it is hidden. He teaches us to seek God in silence and simplicity, and to remain gentle and faithful even when asked to carry heavy responsibilities. His long life of steady devotion reminds us that holiness is built day by day, in small acts of love and trust.
Lord, who drew Saint Sabas into the desert to find You in silence, teach us to seek You in the quiet places of our own lives. Through his prayers, keep our hearts steadfast and at peace. Amen.
