Saint Rose of Lima (1586–1617) was born in Lima, Peru, and became a Dominican tertiary, living a hidden life of intense prayer and penance in a small hermitage in her family's garden. She cared for the sick and the poor of her city, and in 1671 she became the first person born in the Americas to be canonized a saint. She is the patroness of Peru, of Latin America, and of the Philippines.
Rose shows that great holiness can grow in a quiet, hidden life — she never traveled far or founded great works, yet her love for God and for the suffering people around her made her a light for a whole continent. Her patience in illness and hardship reminds us that suffering, united to Christ, is never wasted. She teaches us to make our own home a place of prayer and mercy.
Saint Rose of Lima, you found God in hiddenness, in suffering, and in serving the poor; pray for us and for all the children God has called home, that we may love as simply and completely as you did. Amen.
