Saint Philip Neri (1515–1595) was born in Florence and spent most of his life in Rome, where he founded the Congregation of the Oratory. Known as the 'Apostle of Rome,' he devoted himself to the care of pilgrims, the sick, and the young, drawing people to God through prayer, confession, and gatherings of music and conversation. He was famous for his joy, humor, and deep love of the Eucharist, and was canonized in 1622.
Philip Neri shows that holiness and cheerfulness belong together — he won hearts not by severity but by warmth, laughter, and genuine love for each person he met. His life reminds us that joy rooted in God can be a light to others even in sorrow, and that simple kindness is a path to heaven.
