Saint Peter Chanel (1803–1841) was a French priest who joined the newly founded Society of Mary (Marists) and was sent as a missionary to the island of Futuna in the South Pacific. After several years of patient labor amid hardship and little apparent success, he was martyred in 1841, becoming the first martyr of Oceania. He was canonized in 1954 and is honored as patron of Oceania.
Peter Chanel shows us perseverance in quiet, seemingly fruitless labor: he served with gentleness and patience even when few listened, and his death brought about the conversion of the very island that rejected him. His example teaches that faithfulness matters more than visible results, and that love offered without counting the cost bears fruit in God's time.
