Paul of Thebes (c. 226–341) fled to the Egyptian desert as a young man during the persecution of Decius and remained there for the rest of his long life, living in solitude, prayer, and utter simplicity. He is honored as the first Christian hermit; near the end of his life he was visited by Saint Anthony the Great, and his story was recorded by Saint Jerome.
Paul shows that a hidden life, unseen by the world, can be completely full — sustained by God alone in silence and trust. His friendship with Anthony at the very end reminds us that even the most solitary soul is never truly alone, and that God provides quiet companions at the right moment.
Saint Paul the First Hermit, teach us to be still and to trust that God is enough; watch over all who feel hidden or alone, and keep Ben close to the heart of God. Amen.
