Oscar Romero (1917–1980) was Archbishop of San Salvador who became a fearless voice for the poor and for victims of violence during El Salvador's civil conflict. He was assassinated on March 24, 1980, while celebrating Mass, and was canonized by Pope Francis in 2018.
Saint Oscar Romero shows us that love speaks up for the suffering, even when it costs everything. His courage came not from himself but from staying close to Christ in prayer and in the Eucharist, trusting that no act of love is ever lost.
Saint Oscar Romero, who gave your life at the altar of the Lord, pray for us, that we may love the poor, speak the truth gently and bravely, and trust our loved ones to the mercy of God. Amen.
