Nicholas of Tolentino (1245–1305) was an Augustinian friar from the Marche region of Italy who spent some thirty years ministering in the town of Tolentino. He was known for his gentleness with the poor and the sick, his long hours in the confessional, and his tireless prayer for the souls of the departed. Canonized in 1446, he was the first member of the Augustinian order to be declared a saint, and he is honored as a patron of the holy souls in purgatory.
Nicholas teaches us that love does not end at death — he prayed constantly for those who had gone before us, trusting that our prayers still reach them. His quiet, faithful presence among ordinary people reminds us that comfort is often given not through great deeds but through simply staying near those who suffer.
