Saint Martin I was elected pope in 649 and quickly convened the Lateran Council, which condemned the Monothelite heresy denying Christ's full human will. For refusing to bend to the emperor's decree, he was arrested by order of Emperor Constans II, taken to Constantinople, publicly humiliated, and exiled to Cherson in the Crimea, where he died around 655 from harsh treatment and neglect. He is honored as the last pope to die a martyr.
Martin defended the truth about Jesus even when it cost him his freedom, his health, and finally his life, abandoned by nearly everyone. His witness shows that faithfulness matters more than comfort, and that God stays close to those who suffer for what is right even when they feel forgotten. For anyone carrying a heavy cross, he is a companion who understands loneliness and still trusted God to the end.
Saint Martin, faithful shepherd who suffered exile for love of Christ, pray for us who carry sorrow, that we may hold fast to the truth and trust God's mercy to the end. Amen.
