Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, in 1579, the son of a Spanish nobleman and a freed African woman, and he entered the Dominican order as a lay brother. He served the sick and the poor of Lima with tireless humility, working as a barber and infirmarian, founding care for orphans and abandoned children, and showing tenderness even to stray animals. He died in 1639 and was canonized in 1962 as the patron of mixed-race people and all who seek social justice.
Martin was looked down on for his birth and his race, yet he answered every slight with gentleness and quietly became the heart of his whole city. He shows us that no act of care is too small — a meal, a bandage, a kind word — and that heaven measures greatness by love, not by standing. His humility reminds grieving hearts that God stays closest to the lowly and the wounded.
