Saint Marcellus was a centurion in the Roman army stationed in Tangier, modern-day Morocco. During a celebration of Emperor Maximian's birthday, Marcellus publicly renounced his military service and his allegiance to the Roman gods, declaring himself a Christian. He was martyred for his faith around 298 AD.
