Saint Leonard was a sixth-century Frankish hermit who, according to tradition, was baptized by Saint Remigius and refused honors at the royal court to live a life of prayer in the forest near Limoges, France. There he founded the monastery of Noblac, and he became one of the most beloved saints of medieval Europe, invoked especially as the patron of prisoners and captives.
Leonard shows us that a quiet, hidden life given to God can touch countless others; he sought no fame, yet his compassion for the imprisoned and the forgotten made him a friend to those in chains of every kind. His example invites us to bring gentleness and freedom to anyone who is bound by suffering, grief, or fear.
Saint Leonard, friend of captives and the forgotten, pray for us, that Christ may loosen every chain of sorrow and fear, and lead us into the freedom of His peace. Amen.
