Juan Diego (1474–1548) was an indigenous Mexican convert to Christianity, a humble farmer and weaver who lived near present-day Mexico City. In December 1531, on the hill of Tepeyac, the Virgin Mary appeared to him as Our Lady of Guadalupe, and her image was miraculously imprinted on his tilma, or cloak. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002, becoming the first indigenous saint of the Americas.
Juan Diego shows that God chooses the humble and the ordinary to carry His greatest messages; he doubted his own worthiness, yet trusted and obeyed. His quiet faithfulness — visiting Our Lady's chapel daily for the rest of his life — reminds us that love is proven in small, steady devotion, not grand gestures.
