Saint Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary and foster father of Jesus, was a carpenter in Nazareth who provided for the Holy Family through his daily labor. In 1955, Pope Pius XII established the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker on May 1 to honor the dignity of human work under his patronage.
Joseph teaches that ordinary, quiet work done with love is holy, and that faithfulness in daily duties is a path to God. His humble care for Jesus and Mary shows how a life of service, without fanfare or recognition, can carry out God's greatest plans.
