Saint John of the Cross was a Spanish mystic, a Carmelite friar, and a priest. He was a major figure of the Counter-Reformation in Spain and is one of the thirty-seven Doctors of the Church. He worked with Saint Teresa of Ávila to reform the Carmelite Order, leading to the establishment of the Discalced Carmelites.
