Saint John Chrysostom (c. 347–407) was born in Antioch and became Archbishop of Constantinople in 398. Renowned as the greatest preacher of the early Church — his name means 'golden-mouthed' — he called the wealthy to care for the poor and lived simply himself. His outspokenness led to his exile, and he died on the road in 407; he is honored as a Doctor of the Church.
John shows us that words rooted in love and truth can comfort and heal, even when speaking them costs us dearly. He never stopped trusting God through suffering and exile, ending his life with the words 'Glory to God for all things.' His example invites us to speak gently and honestly, and to give thanks even in sorrow.
