Jane Frances de Chantal (1572–1641) was a French wife and mother of four who was widowed at twenty-eight when her husband died in a hunting accident. Under the spiritual guidance of Saint Francis de Sales, she founded the Congregation of the Visitation of Holy Mary at Annecy in 1610, a community open to widows and women of frail health whom other orders would not receive. She guided the Visitation as it grew to dozens of monasteries, and was canonized in 1767.
Jane Frances knew deep sorrow — she lost her mother as a child, her husband suddenly, and several of her own children — yet she let grief soften her heart rather than close it, even forgiving the man responsible for her husband's death. She shows that a wounded heart can still love greatly, and that holiness often grows quietly out of loss, patience, and faithful daily care for others.
