Saint James of the Marches (1394–1476) was born in Monteprandone, Italy, and became a Franciscan friar and priest, a companion of Saint Bernardine of Siena and Saint John of Capistrano. A tireless preacher throughout Italy and central Europe, he also helped establish the montes pietatis, charitable lending institutions that protected the poor from crushing usury. He died in Naples on November 28, 1476, and was canonized in 1726.
James shows that faith is proved in mercy: he did not only preach about God's love, he built practical works that lifted real burdens from struggling families. His long, patient years on the road remind us that quiet perseverance in kindness, day after day, is itself a holy work.
