Saint Irenaeus (c. 130–c. 202) was born in Smyrna, where he learned the faith from Saint Polycarp, a disciple of the Apostle John, and later became bishop of Lyons in Gaul. He is best known for his work Against Heresies, a defense of orthodox Christian teaching against Gnosticism, and he was declared a Doctor of the Church with the title 'Doctor of Unity' in 2022.
Irenaeus, whose name means 'peace,' worked as a true peacemaker, defending apostolic truth with clarity and charity rather than bitterness. His famous insight that 'the glory of God is man fully alive' invites us to see holiness not as diminishment but as the flourishing God intends for each of us.
O God, who called the Bishop Saint Irenaeus to confirm true doctrine and the peace of the Church, grant us, through his intercession, to be renewed in faith and love, that we may always strive for unity and concord. Amen.
